HOW TO MAKE COFFEE WITH AN AEROPRESS: TWO WAYS TO BREW IT
In this guide
The AeroPress is one of the most versatile brewing methods, because you can change the way you brew with it and achieve very different flavour profiles. With one approach, you'll get more body and intensity, with a flavour profile closer to that of a French press. With the other option – known as the inverted method, you'll enjoy greater clarity in your drink, closer to filter methods.
In this guide we'll show you how to brew delicious coffee with two AeroPress recipes. We recommend trying this brewing method with Quinto Café's Floral profile or Caramel profile. We'll give you detailed instructions so you get the best result!
Traditional method
Step 1: Gather your ingredients and equipment:
To brew coffee with an AeroPress and enjoy an exceptional cup, you'll need the following:
- An AeroPress.
- Ground specialty coffee – we recommend trying it with Quinto Café's Floral profile
- Hot water (ideally between 90°C and 95°C).
- A paper or metal filter designed for the AeroPress.
Step 2: Preparing the ground coffee:
Coffee quality is crucial. Choose fresh specialty coffee, ground just before brewing. Try it with Quinto Café's Caramel profile. You can go for a medium grind, similar to table salt, for a balanced cup. Feel free to adjust the grind to your taste — this method is versatile enough to allow it.
Step 3: Heat the water and rinse the filter:
Heat water to the right temperature, between 90°C and 95°C. Rinse the paper or metal filter and place it in the bottom of the AeroPress. This removes any residual taste from the filter and helps you get a cleaner, tastier extraction.
Step 4: Add the ground coffee to the AeroPress:
Place the AeroPress on a sturdy mug or jug, with the filter end over the cup. We suggest 16 grams of medium-ground coffee for 240 ml of water.
Step 5: Water and steeping time:
Pour hot water over the ground coffee, making sure all the grounds are covered. Then pour in the rest, up to 240 ml of water. Wait 30 seconds and stir with the AeroPress paddle or a spoon. Next, fit the top that will let you apply pressure to the water and coffee. Let the coffee steep for about 3 minutes. This time allows the flavours to develop.
Step 6: Press and serve:
Insert the AeroPress plunger and press down steadily and in a controlled way. You should feel gentle resistance. The coffee will flow straight into your cup. Enjoy your freshly brewed coffee.
Inverted AeroPress method
Step 1: Gather your ingredients and equipment:
For the inverted AeroPress method, you need the same things as for the traditional method.
Step 2: Preparing the ground coffee:
Grind fresh specialty coffee to a medium grind, as mentioned above. Remember that the Caramel or Floral profiles are our recommendations for this method.
Step 3: Assemble it upside down:
Instead of placing the AeroPress directly on the cup, start by assembling it upside down. Put the plunger into the bottom of the chamber and add the ground coffee at the top.
Step 4: Water and steeping time:
Pour hot water over the ground coffee and stir gently to ensure an even extraction. Use the AeroPress paddle or a spoon to stir. Then fit the cap with the pre-wetted filter and let the coffee steep for about 3 minutes for a full infusion.
Step 5: Press and serve:
Once the steeping time is up, place a cup upside down on top of the AeroPress and quickly flip the whole thing over. Careful — this move can be tricky! Press down steadily and in a controlled way so the coffee flows into the cup. Enjoy your freshly brewed coffee.
Conclusion:
Both the traditional and the inverted AeroPress methods are excellent options for anyone looking for a cup of exceptional coffee. Each gives slightly different results, so we recommend experimenting with both to find out which best suits your personal taste. With this versatile tool, you can enjoy the unique flavours of specialty coffee beans in the comfort of your own home.
